Meet the Team

The Immersive Virtual Environments Laboratory is run by the Virtual Environments and Computer Graphics (VECG) group in the Computer Science Department at UCL.

Anthony Steed

Anthony Steed

Professor and Head of Virtual Environments and Computer Graphics

Anthony has worked on virtual reality since the early 1990s. His work has spanned from low-level technical hardware and software issues, through to user experimentation and social issues of the user of immersive technologies.

Simon Julier

Simon Julier

Professor of Situation Awareness Systems

Simon is a professor at the Department of Computer Science. His research interests lie in the vertical chain of how we can get from an environment to actionable information for a user, combining together elements of both data fusion and UI design.

Dr David Swapp

Dr David Swapp

Senior Research Fellow & VR Lab manager

David is a research fellow in the Virtual Environments and Computer Graphics group, and manager of the Immersive Virtual Reality Laboratory since its inception in 2000. His interest is in how human perceptual capabilities can influence the design of immersive systems.

Dr Vijay Pawar

Dr Vijay Pawar

Co-founder of Touch Lab

With a background in Computer Science, Robotics and Virtual Environments, Vijay leads a multidisciplinary team developing autonomous and semi-autonomous robotic tools to help manipulate objects across multiple scales beyond human capabilities.

Sebastian Friston

Sebastian Friston

Research Associate

Sebastian works on CASMS – Context Aware network architectures for Sending Multiple Senses. His interests are in making high fidelity virtual worlds. He is particularly interested in visual rendering, physics simulation and tracking technologies.

Prof Mel Slater

Prof Mel Slater

Part-time Professor

Mel has been involved in research in virtual reality since the early 1990s, and has been the first supervisor of 38 PhDs in graphics and virtual reality since 1989. He has been involved in and led several international projects in this field.
